If you enjoyed Girl, Wash Your Face or Girl, Stop Apologizing, definitely check out Didn’t See That Coming. I tore through this book in less than a day, in a time when I’m already reading thirteen other books and have plenty of other things I should be doing.
Hollis is no less honest or helpful in this short read, and even though it was written in a short time the writing doesn’t show it. In fact, some parts of this book are so raw they feel like you are experiencing them with her. There were parts when I nearly cried, and although there wasn’t much laughter to be had (I HATE crying at books) Didn’t See That Coming was worth the journey.
I’m not currently walking through a season of grief, but as someone who has in the past I could definitely see where this book would be a helpful reference and/or guide when that season comes around again.
As a fan of Hollis’ work, I pre-ordered Didn’t See That Coming in anticipation of what would come from Hollis’ hand next, and it didn’t disappoint. If you are only reading looking for an expose on Hollis’ recent divorce, however, you WOULD be disappointed … Hollis remains as classy as ever and keeps the details private. Although there are mentions throughout (as this book was edited when it was fresh) there is nothing to make me question whether it was written out of spite or as a way to get the last word.
Recommendation:
Overall, I’d recommend this book to those who have recently experienced some kind of grief or loss, and definitely to fans of Hollis’ other works, because Didn’t See That Coming is just as good.

P.S.S. If you enjoy this book, another book I think you might enjoy is How to Weep in Public by Jacqueline Novak. While more tongue-in-cheek and memoir style than this book, it deals with depression (often related to grief) in an entirely unique way.
