Life Beyond A Diagnosis

Broken (In the Best Possible Way) – Jenny Lawson

May 20, 2022 by Nicole Leave a Comment

With two boys only a month shy of being Irish twins (and one being less than two weeks old), reading time is hard to come by… audio books to the rescue! Broken (In the Best Possible Way) was actually read by Lawson, which was the icing on the cake.

Truly, Broken took me ages to actually finish… due to the abundance of language. My older son is just over a year old, and that is not the kind of content he needs to hear… so short of using earbuds (he likes to pull them out), I had to wait until he wasn’t around to finish listening. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this audio book.

Overall Content

The language has already been discussed, so moving on let’s talk about the other content. Broken is not for the faint of heart… and definitely not for listening in public – even if you use earbuds. The riot that is Lawson will have you rolling with laughter, and anyone nearby just might think you have officially lost it.

Some of the stories that Lawson tells are so off-the-wall it seems they couldn’t possibly happen, but then again, that seems to be most of Lawson’s life. Fancy vacuum fires, missing shoes, and the most hysterical thought processes explained in such a logical way that you can’t help but wonder what it might be like to hang around Lawson as friends.

If You Liked this Book by Lawson…

You might also like How to Weep in Public by Jacqueline Novak. Full of dark humor and written in a memoir style, this unconventional writer is good at drawing you in and keeping you interested until the very end.

Recommendation

As long as you aren’t easily offended (or horrified) and love comedy (even the unintentional type), this book is for you. Lawson did a great with the audio book, and the little extra at the end made it even more worth listening instead of reading. Just beware of the frequent foul language, and inappropriate content… have your earbuds ready just in case, or your finger over the pause button…

Have you listened to/read Broken (In the Best Possible Way)? What did you think? Let me know in the comments below!
