Life Beyond A Diagnosis

Reinventing Yourself After Motherhood

November 10, 2023 by Nicole Leave a Comment

Although much can be said about the way a career path may change the way our time is distributed, nothing says time for reinventing yourself quite like motherhood. We are up at all hours, busy more often than not with little ones who truly don’t know better – and it’s for years on end, especially if there are multiple children involved.

Not only are we learning a whole new way of life – we are learning how to take care of a whole other person (or two). Everything changes.

Hobbies are Still Important

Sometimes we get so busy it’s easy to ignore our own needs because we are needed ourselves… but hobbies are still important. If you were a reader before kids, it’s still important to fit in time to read (or listen) to a book, at least occasionally. Like to knit or crochet? Try to fit it in during a nap, and let the dirty dishes rest awhile longer.

Reinventing yourself doesn’t have to mean losing who you were – it can mean becoming a better version of yourself.

Becoming a mother can make you lose sight of what’s important – and the fact that when your kids grow up and move away, you are the one who will be left. The one who will have to have strong boundaries, the skills necessary to entertain yourself if needed, and lots of self-motivation.

Reinventing Yourself

Reinventing yourself doesn’t have to be a bad thing… but if you go from taking care of yourself consistently to neglecting self care, then that’s not a good look (and not a good example, either).

Although I’m preaching to the choir here, remember that this is an opportunity.

A chance to “begin again”. A new beginning.

Not even you can stop you from becoming who you’ve always wanted to be.

Are you overwhelmed, dealing with mental health issues and trying to balance family responsibilities at the same time as reinventing yourself? It’s a balancing act, but you don’t have to become Wonder Woman. In Balancing Mental Health and Family Responsibilities, I share 3 of my favorite tactics to help moms thrive with mental health issues (instead of just survive).
