Life Beyond A Diagnosis

How to Get by with a Sluggish Thought Process

Are you feeling the sensation of trudging through wet cement (that is quickly drying) with each attempt at thinking? You may be struggling with a sluggish thought process … and you aren’t alone.

Before we get too deep into this conversation, think back to before your thoughts felt sluggish. Have they always seemed that way, or is this more recent? That does make a difference, because our primary focus here is on the new-ish sluggish thought process – not the one that has always been there.

Identify the Source of the Problem

Let’s go through the hoops first… I am not, nor have I ever been, a medical professional. This is not medical advice, and should not be construed as such. Please consult your doctor before starting, stopping, or otherwise changing your medicines or medical routine.

Now. If this is a recent occurrence, what changed about the same time? Did you change medications? Start or stop a supplement? Drink more or less caffeine than usual?

Are you getting the same amount of sleep as usual?

If nothing has changed that is seemingly worth your attention, start noticing how much sleep you are getting, caffeine you are consuming, supplements you are taking – and note when you forget them, too.

Is a Sluggish Thought Process a Problem?

If a sluggish thought process is a problem or not entirely depends on you. Does it bother you? If not, then it’s probably not a problem. But since you are here, I’m going to assume it IS bothering you, and therefore, should be addressed.

If you answered the questions above, then you probably know how we are going to try to help your sensation of sluggishness…

First, if you are on any medications, talk to your doctor. This needs to be first because the medication might be the culprit … but either way, it’s always good to either find the problem or eliminate a suspect.

After you talk to your doctor, you can try adjusting your sleep (most of us could use more sleep, anyways), or carefully monitoring your caffeine consumption. It could be as simple as you drinking less caffeine than you’re used to!

If all else fails, you could try the slow, gradual process of changing your diet and food consumption, to see if that clears your thoughts – because an unhealthy lifestyle can cause issues, too! I particularly like the Trim Healthy Mama lifestyle, and explain the benefits for people with mental illness in THIS ARTICLE.

Seeing improvements with your sluggish thought process after talking to your doctor and trying these tips? Let us know in the comments below!
