Life Beyond A Diagnosis

4 Ways to Create “Alone Time” When You’re Not Alone

July 10, 2020 by Nicole 1 Comment

Alone time for introverts is not only a “gold standard”, but a much needed recharging time to fill our batteries before we tackle the day. Unfortunately, especially in this day and age, alone time can be hard to come by. (If you have a young human in the house even on a semi-regular basis, you know what I mean.)

4 Ways to Create Alone Time When You're Not Alone

It’s not like we can simply shut off our need for alone time, however.

That’s why it’s necessary to find a way to create “alone time” even when we aren’t technically alone.

Creating “Alone Time”:

Sometimes you have to create what you need, because it’s not going to be handed to you. Here are a few ways to create alone time or replicate that much needed space.

  •  Probably the most obvious, but it should still be said … work your schedule (where possible) to give you time awake while others in the house are asleep or away. This doesn’t necessarily mean waking up early – you could also stay up late if you are a night owl.
  • While others are occupied (reading, watching television, or other engrossing activities) put in some ear buds (I use these on a regular basis and love them), blast some upbeat music, and pretend to be alone. This may not have the same merits as actual alone time, but sometimes it’s the best we can do.
  • If possible, go for a walk or jog outside … alone. Of course make sure any underage children in the house have supervision, first!
  • Go for a drive all by yourself. Again, make sure any underage children have supervision, then get the heck out of dodge and take a much needed break. Although a drive doesn’t lend itself to many other things (aside from focusing on the road), you can still blast some great tunes and sing your heart out with no one to judge.

Have more alone time than you know what to do with? Although I’m not in that boat, I have some great book recommendations for avid readers over on the book gallery page.

How are you managing alone time in this complicated time? Let me know in the comments below.
