Life Beyond A Diagnosis

3 Reasons for Those with Mental Illness to Try THM

March 29, 2019 by Nicole 2 Comments

Wondering what Trim Healthy Mama and mental illness could possibly have to do with one another? Well, it’s no secret that mental illness can be greatly impacted by what we consume.

3 Reasons for those with a mental illness to try trim healthy mama

There’s that old adage – “you are what you eat” … but there are also countless studies that support the theory that our mental well-being and physical well-being are linked.

With that being said, however, I don’t intend to regurgitate information that is found all over the web. Here are 3 reasons why Trim Healthy Mama is a great lifestyle choice for someone who struggles with mental illness.

Mental Illness & Trim Healthy Mama:

  1. Many anti-psychotics and medicines used to treat mental illness cause weight-gain. Trim Healthy Mama promotes weight loss and/or maintaining a healthy weight. Read more about THM HERE.
    • People with suffering from mental illness have enough to worry about without the medicine causing additional problems.
  2. Less stress-inducing. Not only does THM ditch the calorie counting, but you can eat carbs and fats – just not together. Best of all, you can give yourself “grace”. That means if you mess up just get back on plan in three hours!
    • The symptoms of mental illness tend to cause stress, which is known to make symptoms worse (full circle!). Reducing stress can help take one more burden off those already overworked shoulders.
  3. Great support system. Even without a personal support system, Trim Healthy Mama is full of wonderful women (and men!) who support each other. There are many groups for Trim Healthy Mamas on social media, and the authors put out a podcast for additional support each week.
    • People with mental illnesses tend to do better with support and accountability. Even though it’s “just” a lifestyle and not technically mental health related, an understanding group of people surrounding us (even virtually) can help us improve.

NOTE: Personally, THM is the only lifestyle I have successfully lost weight with while taking medications that promote weight-gain.

TL;DR:

Mental health affected by what we consume, but that’s not the only factor involved. With Trim Healthy Mama we have better health, less stress (about food, at least), and community support.

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Trim Healthy Mama in any way, I simply love the lifestyle and community.
