Life Beyond A Diagnosis

Popular Books I Did NOT Enjoy

March 5, 2021 by Nicole Leave a Comment

Although typically an avid reader (this particular year I’ve experienced a major reading slump), there are definitely books I’ve been thrilled to read – popular books – that were not enjoyable. In fact, some of these popular books were so.. lackluster.. that I didn’t even finish them.

This list of popular books I did NOT enjoy could probably go on for quite a ways, so I’ll limit myself to the three that made the biggest impression.

Popular Books I Didn't Enjoy

Popular Books I Did NOT Enjoy

  •  Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides – although I really wanted to enjoy this book and had heard wonderful things about it from an online book club I follow, it was a struggle to trudge through and never really picked up. Not only did it leave the proverbial *bad taste* in my mouth, but it left me never desiring to read another book by this author again (although I am reluctantly considering a different title, after this book has hopefully worn off some in my memory). Although I read this book approximately five years ago, I STILL cannot shake the lingering reluctance to touch another title from this author after reading it.

Of the three, Middlesex was most definitely my LEAST favorite. Since it was a read from about five years ago, that’s quite the statement.

  • Becoming by Michelle Obama – although not my least favorite (the prior book definitely takes that role), Becoming was a disappointment. In some ways it’s probably my fault for looking forward to it too much – but I thought it was over hyped. Someday when I come back to re-read this book, I expect I will enjoy it much more.
  • You Are A Bada** by Jen Sincero (moderation mine) – this book was highly recommended, but quite a disappointment. There were parts that I enjoyed, but overall it was very frou-frou and not at all something that I would read again. There is definitely an audience for this type of book, however.

Although these books were not for me, that doesn’t mean there isn’t an audience for them. They are popular for a reason, after all. Did you read any of these books, or other books by these authors?

If you did, what did you think of them? Did you enjoy these books?
